Mandovi Pellets Division has set up 1.8 million tonnes per annum capacity
Pelletization Plant which was commissioned in 1979 for supply of blast
furnace grade pellets to Japanese Steel Mills (JSM) under a 10 years contract.
It is located 25 Km. inland from Mormugao harbour and enjoys the benefit
of inland waterways to receive iron ore fines and for dispatch of pellets.
Since the demand for pellets in today's market is for higher iron content
and size and other quality requirements have become more stringent, the
company has geared up to procure high-grade iron ore from neighbouring
Bellary-Hospet sector, as well as Goan ores from Chowgules and other suppliers.
The plant, situated off River Zuari, is provided with a 180 meter long
jetty with facility for discharging barges and mini bulk-carriers up to
2,000 DWT capacity, carrying incoming iron ores and loading outgoing pallets
at the rate of 10,000 tones per day. Finished pallets from the plant find
their way on self-propelled barges to Mormugao Harbour. There they are
put up in stockpile for subsequent loading into ocean-going vessels for
export.
The Pellets Plant has consistently supplied Blast Furnace (BF) grade
pellets fully complying with the strict quality specifications of
the Japanese Steel Mills. The contract between JSL and MPD having
expired, the Company (MPD) has diversified its production to other
markets. As such, MPD has geared itself to become a reliable source
of Blast Furnace grade (BF) grade and Direct Reduction (DR) grade
pellets, aiming at market share in BF pellets for steel mills in
Western Europe, South Korea and China and in DR pellets for consuming
units in Gulf areas, and South Eastern Asia, as also to upcoming
gas based sponge iron plants on the west coast of India. |
